Past Campaigns

Our campaigning has involved public demonstrations, petitions, social-media activity, and collaboration with other environmental organisations. We helped secure Designated Bathing Water Status for beaches on Canvey Island, meaning their water quality will receive regular official testing. SAS has also highlighted problems with damaged sewage infrastructure at San Remo Parade and campaigned for action to protect local beaches and waterways.

More recently, SAS has also investigated pollution originating beyond Southend. When black, tar-like deposits began washing up on beaches from the Thames Estuary towards Clacton, the group reported the material to the Environment Agency and established contact with the Port of London Authority (PLA). SAS subsequently helped uncover information about a major bitumen spill at Gravesend, where approximately 25 tonnes entered the Thames. We are calling for greater transparency, independent pollution testing, and publicly available results.
