Southend Against Sewage (SAS) is a grassroots community campaign group dedicated to protecting Southend-on-Sea’s coastline, waterways and environment from sewage pollution and other threats. The group brings together residents who are concerned about water quality, public health, environmental damage, and the condition of Southend’s sewage infrastructure.
SAS campaigns for greater transparency and accountability from organisations responsible for water and wastewater, particularly Anglian Water. Its work includes monitoring pollution, investigating sewage outfalls, raising concerns with the Environment Agency, and participating in local Water Quality Summits. The group also carries out its own evidence-gathering, including E. coli testing and documenting pollution incidents and infrastructure problems.
